Miss Marjorie Buchanan, 88, of 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, died on Thursday, February 3, 2011, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011. Interment, with no service, will be at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Joy Wilson, Magnolia Manor chaplain and former third grade student of Miss Buchanan will officiate. Miss Buchanan was born Oct. 31, 1922, in Sumter County, Georgia, a daughter of the late Logan Carlyle Buchanan, Sr. and the late Mary Wood Buchanan. Miss Buchanan was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Carlyle Buchanan, Jr., Rev. Dr. Anderson Wood Buchanan, Elise Buchanan Duncan King, and Louise Buchanan Lansford. She received her education in Sumter County, graduating from Americus High School and Georgia Southwestern College, and then from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville with a B. S. degree in Elementary Education. Miss Buchanan taught in several Georgia schools and retired in DeKalb County Schools with thirty-five years of experience. Miss Buchanan was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a life member of Georgia Retired Educators, D. A. R. and was a Delta Kappa Gamma member. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dottie Holcomb Buchanan of Sylacauga, Alabama, and Mrs. Martha Lake Buchanan of Newnan, Georgia. She is also survived by four nieces, one nephew, and her beloved caregivers, Bobby and Barbara Dodson of Plains.
