Mrs. Vivian H. King, 91, passed away Wednesday night, April 20, 2011, at the Mattie Marshall Center at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at Fellowship Baptist Church. Rev. Wendy Joyner will officiate. Burial will take place at Forsyth Cemetery in Forsyth, GA. Born September 19, 1919 in Johnson County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Earl James Harris & Myrtle Hannah Hood Harris. She was the widow of William Browning King. Vivian graduated from Georgia State College for Women and earned a Masters degree from the University of Georgia. She was the first woman in Georgia to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps and served during WWII. Vivian taught at Mary Persons High School in Forsyth, and was employed by the Emory University Library and the New Lincoln School in New York City. Vivian moved with her family to Americus in 1963 when her husband became president of Georgia Southwestern College (now Georgia Southwestern State University.) She was an active supporter of Georgia Southwestern and the Americus community for almost 50 years and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter Hellen Driggers & her husband Walt of Ocala, FL; a son William (Billy) Harris King & his wife Sandra of Dunwoody, GA; a grandson Christopher King Driggers, a niece Mary Heard, a cousin Ernest Harris; and many friends.
