Cathy S. Carter

Ms. Cathy S. Carter passed away Sunday afternoon, July 24, 2011 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church before the service, beginning at 10:00 AM. A daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Blair Simpson and Margaret Horne Simpson, Mrs. Carter was born May 16, 1948 in Jacksonville, FL. She was of the Methodist faith and was an alumnus of Georgia Southwestern College and the University of Georgia. She was employed as a teacher in the Americus school system for 30 years. She loved her grandchildren, gardening, golf, and the beach. Survivors include her children, Tommie Carter Thompson & her husband Stephen Lewis Thompson of Americus and Courtney Carter Edgy & her husband Brad Edgy of Hawkinsville, GA; 2 sisters, Peggy Simpson Wong of Oakland, CA and Blair Simpson Pennington of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, Penny Clare Thompson, Stevie Thompson, Noah Edgy and Emily Edgy; 3 nieces; 1 nephew; 4 great-nieces and 1 great-nephew. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Lee St., Americus, GA 31709; or to The League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, GA 31709; or to Hospice, P.O. Box 1434, Americus, GA 31709.
