AMERICUS, GA – Ms. Barbara Jeanne “Jeannie” Fletcher, age 64, of Americus, Georgia, passed away at Perfect Care Assisted Living Center in Americus on Tuesday afternoon, October 25, 2011 Born in Americus, Georgia, Jeannie was a lifelong resident of Americus. Growing up in Americus, she was an active member of the Americus High School Singers and was a runner-up in the 1965 Miss Americus Pageant before her graduation from Americus High with the class of 1965. Following graduation, Jeannie attended Georgia Southwestern College where she majored in Literature. For many years, Jeannie worked in the offices of Dr. Bud Robinson as an insurance fulfillment clerk. For most of her life after the birth of her children, Jeannie was a full-time homemaker who occasionally would lend assistance to her mother at the Americus Country Club. In 1995, Jeannie accepted a job as dietician-manager at Perfect Care Assisted Living Center in Americus, where she later retired due to declining health. Jeannie was also a former member of Sumter Players having appeared in productions such as “The Sound of Music” and “Camelot” and was also formerly an active member of the Southwest Civic Chorus under the direction of Dr. Ned DeJournett with whom she was a soprano in performances of John Rutter’s “Gloria” and G.F. Handel’s Messiah. Jeannie was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church and was also cared for by the loving congregation of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Perry, Georgia. Jeannie was the daughter of Irene Fletcher, who preceded her in death in 1996, and Leonard C. Fletcher, who preceded her in death in 2001. Jeannie was also preceded in death by her husband of 10 years, Ricky J. Irvin in 1980. Jeannie is survived by a daughter, Shelley Lofton Spivey and a son-in-law, Russell Spivey, both of Warner Robins, Georgia, a son, Br. Elisha “Eli” Irvin, SSAR, of Savannah, Georgia, two grandchildren, Schuyler Spivey & Cameron Spivey, both of Warner Robins, Georgia, two nephews, Michael Fletcher of Canton, Georgia and Jeffery Fletcher of New York, New York. Jeannie is also survived by two former husbands, William Lofton of Petal, Mississippi and John Lee Purvis of Americus. She is also survived by her brother, Leonard A. Fletcher, and sister-in-law, Holland Fletcher, both of Augusta, Georgia. Jeannie is also survived by a host of aunts and uncles and dear friends. Shelley and Eli also remember the staff of Perfect Care Assisted Living, the names of which are entirely too numerous to list in this publication, Judy McIlwraith, Gwen Bolton, and Viola Oliver, RN as persons who were very special in Jeannie’s life. A memorial celebration of life for Jeannie will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 29, 2011, in the chapel at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street in Americus. The Reverend Joe Dunagan of St. Christopher’s at the Crossroads Episcopal Church, Perry, is officiating. Interment of the ashes will be at St. Christopher’s in Perry, GA following the memorial service. The time of the interment will be announced at the memorial service.
