Mr. Ulmer “Snap” Stevens passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. He was 93 years old. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, at 3:30 PM at Faith Baptist Church. Rev. Jeff Gossett will officiate. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Americus. The Hospital Red Coats, Pink Ladies, and Deacons of Faith Baptist Church have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. A visitation will be held Friday, October 28, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street. Born September 21, 1918, he was the son of the late John A. and Evia Bankston Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in World War II. He served as a maintenance supervisor for Redman Industries and Minor Bros. Packing Shed in Andersonville. An avid runner and torch bearer for the Senior Olympics, Mr. Stevens served as a Deacon at Faith Baptist Church and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include his wife: Mrs. Dorothy P. S. Stevens of Americus; a daughter: Barbara Gosa & her husband Wayne of Americus; a step-daughter: Sandra “Sandy” Alford & her husband James Alford, Sr.; a son: Jared Stevens & his wife Kathy of Americus; a step-daughter-in-law: Sarah Helen Swiger of Americus; two sisters: Idalyne Cooper of Butler and Eliza Collins of Bowling Green, KY; grandchildren: Jeff & Beth Gordon of Americus, Roger & Dawn Stevens of St. Louis, MO, Joseph & Laura Gordon of Laos, and Jessica & Joe Hall of Ellaville; step-grandchildren: Shane & Megan Gosa of Americus, Helen Marie & Lance Cornell of Beech Bottom, WV; James Thomas Swiger of Wellsburg, WV, James “Scooter” & Robin Alford of Americus, and Crissy Alford James & Keith James of Americus; great-grandchildren: Stephen, Will, and Justin Gordon of Americus, Josiah, Philip, and Caleb Gordon of Laos, Jacob and Madison Hall of Ellaville, Nicholas and Charles Stevens of St. Louis, MO; step-great-grandchildren: Heather & Matt Grinolds of Americus, Joey Hall of Eastman, Kaitlyn Hall of Eastman, Kristen Alford of Americus, Les Williams of Butler, Samantha Grace James of Americus, Alstin, Charlie, and Helena Cornell of Beech Bottom, WV, Alex, Marisica, and Brock Swiger of Wellsburg, WV; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly Barr Stevens, in 2000. The family members suggest memorial contributions to the League of the Good Samaritan or the Gideons.
