Mr. Bascom Duncan Slappey, 91, of Americus, passed away Monday evening, January 9, 2012, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at 4:00 PM at Lee Street United Methodist Church. Rev. Brooks Partain and Rev. John Brodess will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 3:00 PM and continuing until funeral services begin on Wednesday at Lee Street United Methodist Church. Born September 14, 1920, Mr. Slappey was a son of the late George Marvin Slappey and Eunice Harden Slappey. He was a member of Lee Street United Methodist Church for over fifty years. Mr. Slappey was a pharmacist, working at both Magnolia Manor and Sumter Regional Hospital, and also a cattle and row crop farmer. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Normandy during World War II. Mr. Slappey was preceded in death by his wife Juanita Holloway Slappey in 2003. Survivors include his son, Dr. Edwin Slappey of Atlanta; his daughter, Jane Kelley of Albany; brother Joseph E. Slappey of Alpharetta; sisters Martha Sanford of Montgomery, AL and Christine Jones of Dalton; grandchildren Christy Alderman, Ashley Slappey, and Blake Slappey; great-grandchildren Miles Alderman and Asa Alderman; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Lee Street United Methodist Church, 1102 S.
