Valrie Chambliss Spence

Mrs. Valrie Chambliss Spence passed away Wednesday morning, March 28, 2012, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. Graveside services will be held Friday, March 30, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Lebanon Cemetery in Plains. Rev. Eddie Braswell will officiate. Born April 9, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Mark Arrington Chambliss and Melba Lunsford Chambliss. Mrs. Spence was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women and received a Master’s Degree from Georgia Southwestern College. She taught in the Terrell County School System for 24 years and was a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association. She was a Sunday School teacher and member of the Dawson United Methodist Church, and also a member of the Dawson Garden Club and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Lewis Lafayette Spence; two daughters, Val Spence McIntyre & her husband Tom of Atlanta, GA and Pam Spence Jordon & her husband Denny of Eatonton, GA; a brother, Everette Chambliss & his wife Wynelle of Baconton, GA; three grandchildren: Spence Johnson of Athens,GA, Beth Johnson Avery of Knoxville, TN and Meg Johnson of Dallas, TX; and three great-grandchildren: Read and Wells Johnson and Spence Avery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Dawson United Methodist Church, 306 Stonewall St., Dawson, GA 39842 or to the League of the Good Samaritan at Magnolia Manor, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, GA 31709. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., is in charge of arrangements.
