Walter Guy Spann, 87, of Plains died Saturday, June 9, 2012. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 12 at Lebanon Cemetery in Plains with Dr. Dan Ariail officiating. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Short near Plains. A native of Webster County, Mr. Spann was the son of the late Walter Franklin Spann and Ada Brooks Spann. On his father’s side, he was a descendant of two of the founding families of Webster County. He was the valedictorian of the last graduating class at Weston High School in 1942 before school consolidation. He later studied at the Coyne American Institute in Chicago. A resident of Plains for the past 63 years, he was one of the leading farmers in the community and a Baptist. He was married on Dec. 14, 1950 to Gloria Carter Spann of Plains. They were avid motorcyclists, and together toured all 48 contiguous states on bike. Mrs. Spann preceded him in death on March 5, 1990. Survivors include three sisters, Anita S. Dillard, Melba S. Clements and Frances S. Short (Jack), all of Americus; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to one of Mr. Spann’s favorite charities: Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch, 5671 Ga. Highway 122 E., Hahira, GA 31632.
