Mr. William Alton Murrah, Sr., 96, of Scottsboro, Alabama, passed away January 9, 2013 at his residence in Rosewood Manor in Scottsboro. Mr. Murrah was a native of Chilton County, Alabama. He graduated from Auburn University in 1939 after which he began his career with Farmers Home Administration. He served Jackson County, GA as supervisor with Farmers Home Administration from 1951-1972. After retirement he worked with First National Bank for several years as a farm representative. Mr. Murrah also served during World War II in the United States Army. A member of the First Baptist church of Scottsboro for 60 years, Mr. Murrah was a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, on the benevolence committee, and enjoyed serving in many other capacities. He was a 60 year member of the Lions Club where his favorite part of service was putting together boxes for families who would otherwise receive no gifts for Christmas. Mr. Murrah volunteered with Court Appointed Special Advocates for many years in an effort to meet peoples' needs, whether it be food and clothing, a load of coal, or transportation for medical care. He loved the outdoors and could often be found hunting on Sand Mountain, fishing in Roseberry Creek, or working in his garden. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Rosa Katherine Wise Murrah; his parents, George & Roberta Murrah; and his sister, Eunice Hagen. Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Carpenter (Jimmie); sons, Bill Murrah (Betty) and Wayne Murrah (Joy); five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Wyndol Murrah; sister, Peggy Murrah; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Scottsboro, Alabama. Burial services will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, January 14, 2013 in Lebanon Cemetery in Plains.
