Mrs. Shirley Ward Dowdey passed away Friday morning, February 8, 2013, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, February 11, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., with Rev. Damon Fountain officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Dr. Bryan Myers officating. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, February 10, between the hours of 6:00 & 8:00 PM at Hancock Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Rudy Dowdey, 357 Hwy. 49 S. Born November 24, 1940 in Americus, she was a daughter of the late Annie & Thomas Ward. Mrs. Dowdey worked from 1979 until 2005 as a shipping clerk at the Tog Shoppe. She also worked for a number of years at Manhattan Shirt Company and at Walmart. Survivors include 2 daughters & son-in-law, Marsha Dowdey and June & Darrell Denney, all of Americus; 2 sons & daughters-in-law, Rudy & Carolyn Dowdey of Americus and Brian & Angie Dowdey of Smithville; grandchildren: Kari Denney & James Dumas, Alex Denney, Jonathan Dowdey & Crystal Dowdey, Melissa Dowdey & Oscar Garcia, Brooks & Fred Hodges, Jr., Steven Dowdey & Cassie Jordan, Paxton & Shayla Hanson, Kimberly Dowdey, Brittany Dowdey, Brooke Peak, and Mitchell Dowdey; great-grandchildren: David Denney, Ethan Denney, Hayden Denney, Kensley Denney, Virginia Rae Dumas, Cameron Dowdey, Addy Revell, Jackson Tallent, Grace Ann Tallent, Mason Dowdey, Chasen Hanson, Taylor Garcia, Kalie Garcia, Ali Garcia, and Daulton Garcia; the father of her children & his wife, Sonny & Louise Dowdey of Americus; 2 sisters & brother-in-law, Mattie Turner of Ellaville, and Margie & Donnie Berry of Americus; 2 brothers & sisters-in-law, Thomas & Cindy Ward of Cumming and Jimmy & Debbie Ward of Americus; several cousins including Martha Spence and Ernest Preskitt of Americus; and several nieces & nephews.
