Patricia Ann Moxley

October 19, 1926 — March 3, 2013

Patricia Ann Moxley, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013, in Charleston, SC. Born October 19, 1926, in Los Angeles, Ca., to Harry E. Moxley, Sr., and Maude Sherlock Moxley, Pat spent her youth in Americus, and graduated from Americus High School in 1943. After attending Catholic University in Washington, DC, Pat received her nursing diploma from Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital and then earned her B.S. in Nursing Education from LSU. Later she received a Masters in Nursing Education from Emory University and then attended Columbia University Teachers College, NYC, where she received her Ed.D. in 1973. Pat was a dedicated professional nurse who loved nursing education. She worked in hospitals in Atlanta, New Orleans, and Americus. She began teaching at Southwestern School of Nursing in Shreveport, La., and taught at LSU’s School of Nursing and at Texas Woman's University in Dallas, Texas. Pat finished her career as an Assistant Dean at The Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing in Augusta, and later at Southwestern School of Nursing, Shreveport, La. Pat worked devotedly to achieve one of her dreams: that nursing would become a highly regarded professional degree. Thanks to educators with Pat’s vision, nurses now need a degree (BSN) to work for most hospitals. A devout Catholic, Pat supported the church faithfully. She cherished her Irish heritage, passing on her love for her ancestry to her nieces and nephews. Pat traveled to Ireland several times and visited County Meath to meet her cousins. Pat loved to travel, toured Europe several times, and vacationed for a time in Spain. She loved her family dearly and became a Moxley family legend as an adoring aunt to her nieces and nephews. Pat is survived by her brother Harry E. Moxley, Jr., and sister-in-law, Marie Carlton Dudley Moxley, of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Nieces and nephews: Beth Moxley Lee, of Charleston, SC; Harry E. Moxley, of Washington DC; Carlton Moxley Long (Arthur Long III), of Knoxville, Tn.; Haywood D. Moxley (Margaret Renkl), of Nashville, Tn.; Anne Moxley Barnes (Barry), of Augusta, Ga.; John Flynn Moxley (Leigh), of Charleston, SC. And great nieces and nephews: Harriett and Katherine Lee; Arthur Long IV and Dudley Long; Sam, Henry, and Joe Moxley; Jordan Barnes; and Marlowe Moxley. A memorial mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Isidore BaKy officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 332 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709.
