Dr. Augusto Lopez, 84, passed away Monday evening, May 20, 2013, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. A funeral mass is planned for 11:00 AM Saturday, May 25, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Clif Marquis officiating. A rosary service will be held Friday evening, May 24, at 5:00 PM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, followed by visitation at the family home, 309 Eckles Road, beginning at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312; or to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 332 S. Lee St., Americus, GA 31709. A native of Colombia, Dr. Lopez was born July 19, 1928, a son of the late Jose de Jesus Lopez and Beatriz Castaño Lopez. He served as a physician and pilot in the Colombian Air Force from 1956-1959, and later flew private helicopters helping people in need of medical care. Dr. & Mrs. Lopez moved from Colombia to the United States in 1962, and have been residents of Americus since 1971. He was a physician, having served as pathologist and Chief of Staff at Sumter Regional Hospital. Dr. Lopez was a member of the Kiwanis Club, and was an artist who enjoyed painting and sculpting. Survivors include his wife, Lilian Lattke Lopez of Americus; his children, Connie Gomez (David John) of Luxembourg; Federico Lopez (Nancy) of Lexington, SC; David Lopez (Laura) of Denver, CO; and Daniel Lopez (Sherry) of Cumming, GA; brothers & sisters, Ramiro Lopez, Astrid Lopez, Graciela Bonilla, and Alberto Lopez, all of Bogota, Colombia; grandchildren: Christina Gomez, Daniel Gomez, Stefanie Gomez, Alex Lopez, Lyle Lopez, Anna Lee Lopez, Mary Frances Lopez, Adam Lopez, Eric Lopez, Megan Lopez, & Gracie Lopez; and several nieces & nephews.
