Thomas H. Hawkins

Mr. Thomas H. Hawkins, 89, passed away Saturday evening, May 25, 2013, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. Funeral services are planned for 2:00 PM on Monday, May 27, 2013 in the chapel at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., with Rev. Bill Dupree & Rev. C. G. Haugabook officiating. Burial will be private. The family will be receiving friends at their home, 761 Upper River Road. A native of Americus, Mr. Hawkins was born January 10, 1924, a son of the late Carl Grady Hawkins & Gertrude Hudson Hawkins. He served as Military Police in the United States Army during World War II. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Agriculture from the University of Georgia and was retired, after 20 years, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mr. Hawkins was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Americus Kiwanis Club. He was an avid horseman and he loved farming. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Helen Prickett Hawkins; a son, Thomas H. Hawkins, Jr. (Jamie) of Americus; a daughter, Kathryn H. Cooper (Mike) of Atlanta; 5 grandchildren, Hudson Thomas Hawkins of Bainbridge, Haley M. Hawkins of Americus, Houston B. Hawkins of Americus, Thomas Daniel Cooper (Natalie) of Buford, & Katie Cooper of Buford; and 3 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Salem United Methodist Church, 903 Upper River Road, Americus, GA 31709, or to Phoebe Sumter Hospice, P.O.
