Mr. James Mitchell Thompson, 91, passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 29, at his daughter's home in Ellaville. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 8, from the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. Rev. Matt Stewart will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM on Saturday at Hancock Funeral Home. Born December 15, 1922 in Early County, GA, he was a son of the late James Warren Thompson and Annie Merle Bush Thompson. Mr. Thompson was retired from the United States Army as Command Sergeant Major, having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member, for over 30 years, of Lee Street United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Gideons International. Mr. Thompson was a master wood craftsman and a private pilot. He was loving and kind, and was a mentor to many. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Greene Thompson, in 2011, by his daughter, Carol Thompson Walker in 1983, and by five brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Thompson of Ellaville and Rhonda Beers of Hickory, NC; son-in-law Darrell Hoffman & his wife Katie of Americus; grandchildren: Mollie & Scott Freeman, Keith Walker, Stephanie Brittain, Rhonda Hoffman, Chad & Jennifer Hoffman, and Rebekah & Chester Giles; fourteen great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces & nephews.
