Mr. Johnnie Lee Carter, 63, passed away on Friday, February 21, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. Funeral services are planned for 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 5, from Big Bethel Baptist Church in Americus, with Elder James Grier officiating. He will lie in state from 10:00 AM until service time. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 4, between the hours of 6:30 and 7:30 PM at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. Deacon Johnnie Lee Carter was born on July 15, 1950 in Macon County to the late Spencer Carter, Sr. and the late Ida Lene Perkins Carter. He was educated in the Schley County public school system and graduated from James B. Dudley, Sr. High School, Greensboro, NC. He was a member of the Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Dawson, under the direction of Elder James Grier, where he was considered a true man of God and a very hard working Deacon. Johnnie was well-known as "Granddaddy" to the many friends and family members he touched with his big heart, showing tremendous love in giving his last and putting others before himself. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Wynette Carter Aldridge and Brenda Jean McCormick; one brother, Calvin Carter; one uncle, Charles Hill; one step-son, Ray A. Johnson; and one great-grandson, Trayvion Henry. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 33 years, Mrs. Hazel Carter of Americus; one son, Leon Carter (Glenneva) of Americus; one adopted great-grandson, Jaekwon Merritt; four step-daughters, Brenda Slappy, Geneva Mable, Joanne Patillo, and Sharon Angrish (Thomas); two step-sons, Aurther Robinson (Norma) and Charlie Johnson (Wanda); 26 grandchildren, including 8 he raised as his own: Alonzo Burton, Jennifer Wright (Calvin), Makeithia Lyles, Christopher Johnson (Shawntel), Richard Lyles (Andrea), Shantail Hooks-Evans (Corderius), Dominique Hooks, and Jennifer Hooks (Anthony); 31 great-grandchildren; ten siblings: Henry Carter (Alice) of Americus, Spencer Carter (Mary) of Kernersville, NC, Lee Morris Carter of Austell, Alma J. Hicks of St. Mary's, GA, Charlamange Brown (Lee) of Columbus, Rosa Marie Feagins (Ricky) of Ellaville, Jeanette Carter-Lee (Hildebrand) of Conyers, Marcey Harris (Carlos) of Austell, and Tammy Smith of Americus; a devoted cousin, Vanessa Freeman (James); a devoted friend, Mr. Willie Moses (Letha); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
