William Lavada Williams

December 9, 1923 — August 22, 2008

Mr. William Lavada Williams, 84, passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning, August 22, 2008, at Sumter Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, in the Martha McDonald Moore Memorial Chapel at Magnolia Manor. Rev. Allan Purtill and Magnolia Manor assistant chaplain Joy Wilson will officiate. The family will receive friends at the chapel following the service. Private interment, with no service, will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Williams was born on December 9, 1923, in Sandersville, a son of the late Linsey Carl Williams and Mattie Harris Williams. He attended Lanier High School for boys in Macon and graduated from Normal Park College in Norman Park, GA and from the Electronic Labs in Louisville, KY. He served in the U.S. Army 78th Infantry Division from 1943 until 1946. Mr. Williams served as an engineer and supervisor with American Telephone and Telegraph Company and retired after thirty-one years, working the entire time in Winston Salem, NC. While living in Winston Salem, he was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a member of the church choir, and served as a deacon. He was a member of the Masonic lodge in North Carolina for fifty years. After retirement, he moved to Woodland, NC where he volunteered with Hospice and served with the Woodland volunteer fire department. He was a member of the Woodland First Baptist Church. He later moved to Americus and was a resident of Magnolia Manor and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was married to Kathleen (Kitty) McCall Williams. Survivors, in addition to his wife, Kitty, include a brother, Linsey Carl Williams of Scottsdale, AZ; three step-children, Kay M. Hipp of Asheville, NC, Scott McCall of Atlanta, and Walter Earl McCall of Albany; a niece, Elizabeth Williams, and a nephew, Daniel Williams, both of Scottsdale, AZ. Hancock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
