Mrs. Gertrude Gill McLendon, 93, 2001 South Lee Street, passed away very early Thursday morning, September 18, 2008. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 21. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mike Ricks and Rev. Keith Parks officiating. Deacons of First Baptist Church are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers. Born November 30, 1914, in Jasper, FL, Mrs. McLendon was a daughter of the late Andrew Wade Gill and Ella Humphries Gill. She worked as a beautician and hair stylist for 40 years and was a very active member of the First Baptist Church and the WMU of the church. She touched many lives in a positive manner while teaching in the children's Sunday School department of First Baptist for more than 30 years, and by the artistic arrangements of flowers she provided for her church and for Magnolia Manor. Survivors include her son, Michael H. McLendon and his wife, Malinda, of Athens, GA and Arlington, VA; a sister, Orea Spivey of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Michael Ricks of Watkinsville, Michaelyn Leigh and Todd Rozar of Athens, and Michele Kathryn and Charles Singleton of Athens; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her devoted husband, Colquitt Logan McLendon. Hancock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
