Grace Mcwhorter

November 24, 1913 — November 13, 2008

Mrs. Grace Guerry McWhorter, 94, 114 Sullivan Drive, passed away on Thursday morning, November 13, 2008 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with interment to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. A grandson, Ralph Brock, will officiate. Grandsons will serve as active pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 15. Memorial contributions may be made to Perfect Care, 114 Sullivan Drive, Americus, GA 31709. Born November 24, 1913, in Americus, she was a daughter of the late Ellington Clarence Guerry and Effie Moore Gill Guerry. She was a grand-daughter of James Peter Guerry, a pioneer citizen and one of the founding fathers of Americus. Mrs. McWhorter lived in Atlanta for many years, returning here in 1976. She worked for the Department of Human Resources, State of Georgia, for 6 years, and was a cosmetologist for 30 years. After returning to Americus, she worked with Dill’s Florist for a number of years. She was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church and was active in the adult Sunday School class of the church as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Anthony Homemaker’s Club and was a member emeritus of Chapter 123, Order of the Eastern Star in Atlanta. She was also a former member of the Artesian City Region Antique Car Club, and was an honorary lifetime member of the Flintstone Camping Club. Her mother, Mrs. Effie Guerry, planted a tulip in her front yard on Felder Street the year Mrs. McWhorter was born. That tulip came up and bloomed every year after that until a gardener unknowingly cut it down four years ago and it never came back after that. Many residents of Americus will remember the little fence that was built around the tulip for many years to protect it. Survivors include two daughters and three sons-in-law, Barbara Anne and Carl Carson of St. Augustine, FL, Guerry Joyce and Carl Davis of Naples, FL, and Don Huddleston of Douglasville; 11 grandchildren; and several great grandsons and great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry William McWhorter, and by a daughter, Judy Lee Huddleston. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, is in charge of arrangements.
