Mrs. Jane Chappell Short, 80, passed away shortly after noontime on Saturday, February 28, at Phoebe-Sumter Hospital. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ron Perry officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the service. Born September 9, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Chappell and Bertha Israel Chappell. She was the retired bookkeeper for James Short Farms. She loved flowers, working in her yard, and doing for others. She was a long-time member of Hebron Baptist Church, and for a few years following her retirement, she was a member of Central Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, James W. Short; her sons, Rufus Short and his wife Debra, and Glenn Short, all of Americus; a sister, Sandra Chappell; two grandchildren, Rufus Short, Jr. and his wife Jessica and Andrea Short Walker and her husband Adam; three great grandchildren, Rufus W. Short, III, Ethan G. Short, and William K. Walker. Her only daughter, Shirley Short, passed away on June 13, 1972.
