Jesse Hubert Greene

Jesse Hubert Greene of Americus died April 10, 2015 at Magnolia Manor. He had resided in Americus since 1967. Dr. Greene was born in Weston, Webster County, Georgia on December 8, 1919 to Jesse Walton Green and Susie Ethel Smith Green. He was in the last graduating class of Weston high school in 1935. He graduated from Berry College in Rome, Georgia in 1941. During World War II he served two years in Naval Intelligence in New Orleans before being given command of the LCT 1268 in the south Pacific. He served as skipper of the LCT 1268 through the end of hostilities and at his death was one of the last living men to have commanded a ship in combat against the kamikazes. Following the war he earned his doctorate from New York University and taught at Georgia Southwestern State University from 1953 until his retirement in 1981. At his retirement he was Chairman of the Department of Business Administration and was made a Professor Emeritus of the Georgia Board of Regents. Dr. Greene was a Deacon at Central Baptist Church in Americus. Prior to his retirement he had been active in the Boy Scouts and Americus Rotary Club. He was a Mason for more than seventy years from the Marshall Lodge #188 F&AM (Masonic Lodge) in Preston, Georgia. He is survived by his wife Cornelia Harris Greene of Americus; a son Jesse Michael Greene and wife Kathy of Americus; a daughter Cindy Greene Collins and husband Steve of Blue Ridge, Georgia; four grandchildren Jesse Nathan Greene and wife Maribel of Americus; Emory Michael Greene of Americus, Crystal Greer of Blue Ridge, Melissa McIntyre and husband Steve of Chattanooga, Tennessee; great grand-children Lexi Jeffers and Daniel Gibson of Blue Ridge, and, Addison McIntyre and Cooper McIntyre of Chattanooga, Tennessee; a sister Lannelle Green Philpot and husband Sam of Houston, Texas; a sister-in-law Frances Harris of Americus; and, a sister-in-law Lillian McDuffie formerly of Preston, Georgia. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Edna Greene Capps of Alpharetta, Georgia and a brother Thomas Smith Green of Columbus. Services will be held at Central Baptist Church, Upper River Road, Americus, at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 12, 2015.
