Martha Anne Wootten Hunter died on December 20, 2008 at Magnolia Manor. She was born December 13, 1925 to Paul Lewis Wootten and Eunice McGhee Wootten. A lifelong resident of Americus, she was happiest when serving others. She graduated from Americus High School,. where she was affectionately known to all as "Tootie Wootten", and went on to serve her country during World War II by volunteering at Graham Aviation (now Souther Field Airport). In 1949 she married Samuel R. Hunter and became a devoted wife and mother of three. Her family was her greatest joy and she relished her role as grandmother and great-grandmother. Martha Anne was a dedicated lifelong member of First Methodist Church and she served the church happily throughout her life in many volunteer roles, helping in the office every week in her final years. She was a lifelong member of the Epworth Sunday School Class. In addition to her church activities, Martha Anne was active in the Junior Service League and the Sumter Regional Hospital Auxiliary, where she most enjoyed assisting patients in the mammography department. She was an avid bridge and tennis player throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel R. Hunter, Sr., her brother, Elbert Wootten and her sister, Emily Wootten Groover Devours. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Reba Hunter of Americus and Paul and Linda Hunter of Tampa, Fl., and her daughter Anne Hunter, also of Americus. Her grandchildren are Laura and David Erickson of LaGrange, Ga., Chris and Jennifer Hunter and Leigh Anne and Clay Comer, all of Columbus, Ga., and Samuel P. Hunter of Tampa, Fl. Great-grandchildren are Christopher Hunter, Caroline Erickson, Claire Erickson, and Savannah Comer. Friends may call at the family residence at 1311 Crawford Street. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709, or to the League of the Good Samaritan at Magnolia Manor, 2001 S. Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709. Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 23 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Members of the Epworth Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers are Chris Hunter, David Erickson, Clay Comer, Samuel P. Hunter, Walter Stapleton, Frank Chappell and Robby Reddish. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
