Mr. John R. Durham, Sr., age 89, passed away on Sunday evening, May 10, 2015, at Willson Hospice House in Albany. Funeral services with military honors are planned for 11:00 on Thursday, May 14, from the graveside at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Brooks Partain will officiate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, May 13, between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 PM at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. Born October 3, 1925 in Cordele, Mr. Durham was a son of the late Arnold Enoch Durham and Laura Love Hall Durham. He was a World War II Navy veteran, having served in Hawaii and Samar in the Philippines. Mr. Durham retired in 1980 from the J.C. Penney after 32 years in various management positions within the company. After retirement, he operated an antiques business for 15 years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, having joined the church at the age of twelve, and was also a member of the Alexander H. Stephens Camp Number 78 Sons of Confederate Veterans and was a former member of the Americus Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Harris Durham of Albany; one son, John Russell Durham, Jr. (Janet Marie Candy Durham) of Albany; one daughter, Susan Carole Durham (James Alan Knapp) of Columbus, OH; and two grandchildren: Jennifer of Atlanta and Kelly of Albany.
