Mrs. Sue Rawls Cornwell, affectionately known by her family as "Grando", passed away early Sunday morning, June 28, 2015, at her home in Sumter County. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30. At other times, friends may call at 304 Cornwell Road. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, from the Plains United Methodist Church with Rev. Stan Bellew, assisted by Pastor Charles Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and include Cornwell Webb, Colby Webb, William Webb, Lewis Webb, Ry McRee, Fritz Turpin, Collins Turpin, Stuart Williams, and Woodie Williams. Music will be provided by pianist Amanda McRee and singers Woodie Williams, Greta Austin, and Mandy Anderson. Born September 17, 1928 in Pulaski County, Mrs. Cornwell was a daughter of the late Homer C. Rawls and Annie Collum Rawls. She was a graduate of Georgia Southwestern College and attended Mercer University where she attained a teaching certificate. She taught elementary school in Smithville for two years. She was a member of the Plains United Methodist Church and worked with her husband, the late Woodie C. Cornwell, in their farming endeavors. Mrs. Cornwell was the pianist at Rylander Methodist Church until the church merged with Plains United Methodist Church. She continued as the assistant pianist at Plains United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Women's Literary Club of Americus, the Friday Lunch Bunch, and the Plains PALS Club. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Chris McRee of Smithville, Linda and Dr. Fred Turpin of Albany, Judge Claire Cornwell and Alan Williams of Savannah; a brother, Homer C. Rawls and his wife, Rita, of Gordon; grandchildren, Cornwell and Leah Webb of Smithville, William and Rebecca Webb of Americus, Lewis and Beth Webb of Americus, Kristin Taylor of Leesburg, Fritz Turpin of Perry, Collins Turpin of Albany, Stuart Williams of Savannah, and Woodie Williams of Savannah; step grandchildren, Ry and Candy McRee of Smithville, Greta and Bruce Austin of Albany, Mandy and Jon Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Craig Cornwell of Montgomery, AL; many great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
