Olyra Thomas Rainey

Mrs. Dorothy Olyra Thomas Rainey, age 104, of Atlanta, formerly of Americus, passed away at Wesley Woods at Bud Terrace in Atlanta on Sunday, February 8, 2009. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, in the First Baptist Church of Americus with Rev. Rusty Mauldin and Rev. Keith Parks officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10. Born May 7, 1904, in Gordon County, Mrs. Rainey was a daughter of the late John James Thomas and Emma Lee Haynes Thomas, and the wife of the late Earl Eugene Rainey. Mrs. Rainey was a homemaker and was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Americus, holding leadership roles in many of the church activities through the years. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Junior Service League, and the Day Lily Garden Club. She was a very active member of the Delphian Society while it was in existence. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Newell Rainey Bridges and Burt Bridges of Atlanta; two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Elizabeth (Beth) Bridges Spencer and John Spencer, Mary Bridges Waters and Bill Waters, all of Atlanta; four great grandsons, John (Jack) Spencer, Jr., Thomas Bridges Spencer, William C. (Billy) Waters, Jr., and Burton Lawrence Waters, all of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews, including Doris Parham of Columbus. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
