Hansel "Bubba" Bateman

Mr. Hansel Ray “Bubba” Bateman, 92, died on Tuesday morning, April 14, 2009, in Americus. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17, in Riverside Cemetery, North Gate, in Macon, with Rev. Brooks Partain officiating. Born March 22, 1917, in Macon, Mr. Bateman was a son of the late Gilbert Columbus Bateman and Lyda Patterson Bateman. He had been a resident of Americus since 1988. Mr. Bateman was a retired retail grocer, a co-owner of Bateman Food Stores in Macon. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Americus, a member of the Men’s Bible Class, and was an associate member of Highland Hills Baptist Church in Macon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and spent three years in North Africa during World War II. He was a charter member and past president of the Macon Vine-Ingle Lions Club, a member of the Georgia Bulldog Club, a member of the Bibb County Grand Jurors Association and a life member of the Middle Georgia Historical Society. He was a member and past president of the Magnolia Kiwanis Club and served on the Board of Trustees of Georgia Industrial Home in Macon. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16. Memorial contributions may be made to the League of the Good Samaritan, Magnolia Manor, 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709, or to any favorite charity. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lynn Carson Bateman of Americus; a step-daughter, Ellen Fulmar and her husband James of Albany; 5 nieces, Bet Carter of Savannah, Patricia Honeycutt and her husband Dwight of San Francisco, CA, Kay Forrestor of Sky Valley, GA, Beverly Wade of Perry, and Cookie Register and her husband Charlie of Decatur, AL; 4 nephews, Bill Bateman of Macon, Dwight L. Bliss, Jr. and his wife Ann of Americus, Claude Bazemore and his wife Kay of Brandon, FL, and Gilbert Bateman and his wife Mary Ann of Macon; a sister-in-law, Mildred Wade of Cochran; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. His first wife to whom he was married for 56 years, Audrey Wade Bateman, preceded him in death. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
