William Talmage Studstill

William Talmage Studstill, Sr. (“Billy”) passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2016. Born on April 7, 1937 in Americus, Georgia to J.T. and Essie Studstill, Billy, (known as “Hoss” by Coach Jim Luck) excelled on the athletic fields in Americus, where he was the quarterback for the Americus High Panthers, catcher for the baseball team (State Champs ’53,’54), and a letterman on the basketball team. After meeting the love of his life at age 15 at a JV football game, Sarah N. Howell, they married March 16, 1958. While attending Georgia Tech, Billy played for the Yellow Jackets as quarterback for the freshman football team and catcher for the baseball team for four years, and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity (Gamma Alpha 948). After graduating with an Industrial Engineering degree in 1959, Billy began an extensive career which spanned over forty years in electrical and mechanical engineering design with Southern D.E., Georgia Power, Southern Company, Southern Solar, the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Monsanto, and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Billy was a true Tech man, bled White and Gold, loved the Varsity, boiled peanuts, barbecue, fishing, and his family. His unconditional love, unwavering support, quiet wisdom, and generosity touched so many lives. He will be missed so very much, yet he will be with us always. Billy was predeceased in death by his parents and brother, Roy Studstill, all of Americus. In addition to Sarah, Billy is survived by his three children – daughter Catherine and husband Steve Lasher; son Bill Studstill, Jr. and wife Anne; daughter Leigh and husband Ted Harris; and 7 beloved grandchildren – Natalie, Will, Tate, Lisa, Bruce, Talmage, and John, all of Atlanta. He is also survived by aunt and uncle Helen B. and George Smith, of Oglethorpe, Georgia, cousin Franklin Hardin of Americus and other cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 27, between the hours of 10:15 & 11:00 AM in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, January 27 in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. with Rev. Earl Dunmon officiating. A private interment will follow.
