Annie Claire Barksdale

Mrs. Annie Claire Barksdale, 93, passed away on Monday morning, May 4, 2009, in Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Parks officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service, with no procession to Oak Grove Cemetery where she will be interred. A native and lifetime resident of Americus, Mrs. Barksdale was born March 3, 1916, a daughter of the late Lucien William Slappey and Lizzie Kate Morris Slappey. As a member of the First Baptist Church for the past 81 years, she was its second-oldest member. She was a homemaker and a loving family member. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Jane Barksdale of Americus and Gordon and Sharon Barksdale of Conyers; two sisters, Katherine Oates of Americus, and Lucia Titshaw of Seville; four grandchildren, Tracie Barlow of Valdosta, Bill (and Sherry) Barksdale of Cullman, AL, Jeff Barksdale of Conyers, and Michelle (and Keith) Landers of Ellaville; seven great grandchildren, Katelyn Barksdale, Josh Barksdale, Trina Barksdale, and Dallyn Barksdale, all of Cullman, AL, Lauren Goodin of Valdosta, Savanna Barlow of Valdosta, and Collin Landers of Ellaville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Barksdale, Jr., and by two granddaughters, Amanda Barksdale and Ellen Barksdale. The family members suggest that memorial contributions might be made to the First Baptist Church, 221 South Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA is in charge of arrangements.
