Mrs. Elizabeth Chappell Hartsfield, age 92, of 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, died Thursday night, May 21, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services are planned for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, from the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home. Rev. Brooks Partain will officiate. A visitation will be held at Hancock Funeral Home, following the funeral service, with a private interment at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery to follow. Born October 6, 1916, in Americus, Mrs. Hartsfield was the daughter of the late Walter Alexander Chappell and Mary Lou Holley Chappell. She was the widow of Joseph Floyd Hartsfield who preceded her in death in 2003. A graduate of the University of Georgia at age 20, Mrs. Hartsfield worked for Sumter County more than 30 years, retiring after serving as County Treasurer and Secretary to the Board of Commissioners. She was a member of Central Baptist Church where she kept the church nursery for many years. Mrs. Hartsfield was a joyful person and a gardener who enjoyed canning and preserving food. She took care of everyone in her family in their times of sickness and loved watching the birds and attending to her flowers. She was an excellent cook, her specialties including pound cakes and hush puppies. Survivors include one son, David Hartsfield and his wife Sharon of Americus; one daughter, Marian Williamson and her husband Bob of Clayton, GA; one sister-in-law, Gwen Mashburn and her husband Lee of Roswell; grandchildren, Boyd & Bonnie Lovelace of Vale, CO, Patrick & Tonya Lovelace of Little Rock, AR; Holly Williamson of Cullowhee, NC, Lindsey & Jeromy Roberts of Americus, & Kyle & Katelyn Hartsfield of Leesburg; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Lovelace of Americus, and Gracie Lovelace and Kate Lovelace, both of Little Rock, AR. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 1925 Century Blvd., NE, Suite 10, Atlanta, GA 30345-3315. Friends may call at the residence of David & Sharon Hartsfield, 393 Morris Drive, Americus. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
