Mr. Arthur Lee Varnum, age 80, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. Funeral services, with military honors, are planned for 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 16, from the graveside at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Brooks Partain officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., between the hours of 9:00 & 9:45 AM. A native of Lee County, Mr. Varnum was born August 23, 1935, a son of the late Arthur Alvin Varnum and Daisy Lee Varnum. Mr. Varnum was retired from the transportation industry as a truck driver, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served from 1953 until 1957, achieving the rank of Airman Second Class. He was also a veteran of the United States Army, having served from 1958 until 1961, achieving the rank of Specialist Fourth Class. Mr. Varnum was preceded in death by his wife, Leila Miller Varnum; by two sisters: Martha Pratt and Betty King; and by one brother, Wayne Varnum. Survivors include one son, Greg Varnum (Suzanne); three brothers: Otto Varnum, James Varnum, and Donald Varnum; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
