Mrs. Lorice Phillips Hammond, one day short of her 96th birthday, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2009, at her residence in Plains. A private memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009 from the graveside at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Plains United Methodist Church, 305 West Church Street, Plains, GA 31780, or to any charity of choice. Born June 7, 1913, in Marion County, Mrs. Hammond was a daughter of the late Willis Sylvester Phillips and Essie Stringfellow Phillips. Mrs. Hammond was a member of the Plains United Methodist Church and a former member of Lee Street United Methodist Church. For 61 years she owned and operated Lorice’s Beauty Shop in Americus. Survivors include a son, J. Samuel (Sam) Hammond & his wife Marie K. Hammond of Durham, NC; two grandsons, Christopher Hammond & his wife Kelli L. Hammond of New London, CT, & John Hammond of Columbus, Ohio; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Nellie Jennings of Plains, & Marie Griffin & Doris Christian, both of Americus; and numerous nieces & nephews. Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Virgo Hammond, in 1967. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
