Nelson Weathersby

Rev. Nelson Weathersby, 86, formerly of Americus, passed away on Thursday afternoon, September 3, in Newnan. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 6,at Rehoboth Baptist Church in Sumter County from 2:30 until 3:30, followed by the funeral service. Rev. Bryan Carroll will officiate. Grandsons who will serve as pallbearers include Jim Weathersby, Edward Lanier, Matt Dowling, Alex Weathersby, Luke Weathersby, and Jack Weathersby. Born February 19, 1923, in Randolph County, Rev. Weathersby was a son of the late Henry Thomas Weathersby and Jessie Myrtle Shaw Weathersby. He was a Southern Baptist minister for about 50 years in Georgia, Alabama, and Kentucky. In Sumter County, he served as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church and Rehoboth Baptist Church from which he retired in 1990. He attended several colleges and universities, including the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. In Newnan, he was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He served for many years as a trustee for the Georgia Baptist Childrens’ Home. Those who desire may make contributions to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, 9250 Hutcheson Ferry Road, Palmetto, GA 31268. Survivors include his wife, Erma Spann Weathersby of Newnan; a daughter, Jean Lanier of LaGrange; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael N. and Risë Weathersby of Atlanta, and Marty and Gina Weathersby of Newnan; a sister, Mary Steinmeyer of Sanford, FL; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA is in charge of arrangements.
