Mr. Lugene Hooks departed this earthly life on September 12, 2017. Services are planned for Saturday, October 7, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. Cremation will follow, with burial to be at a later date in Sue Walker Cemetery in DeSoto. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 5 and Friday, October 6, between the hours of 6:00 & 8:00 PM at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. Born in Sumter County on March 19, 1967, he was a son of the late Sally Mae Hooks and the late Henry Lee McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Willie James Hooks "Spoody" and Willie Aaron Hooks "Man"; and by his uncles, Willie Holmes "Pap", Simmie Lee Floyd, R.C. Sheffield, and Willie C. McKenzie. Known to his family and friends as "Duke", he had a smile that would light up the room, and he loved spending time with family and friends. His last employment was with Burger King until his health began to fail. He was educated in the Sumter County School System. Memories of him will forever be cherished by his family: Sons: Javorris Hooks and Tavario Rentz, both of Americus; brother, Leroy Hooks of Americus; fiancée, Betty Coleman and step-children Joseph Coleman, Jr., Christopher Coleman, all of Americus, and Crystal Coleman of Miami; his aunts: Ossie Westbrook and Lucile Brown, both of Americus, Rosa McKenzie and Mamie McCray, both of DeSoto, Essie Mae Mitchell of Leslie, and Josephine Hooks of Rochester, NY; uncles: Johnny Hooks of Ft. Lauderdale, Leroy Hooks "Jimbo" of Leslie, Henry Hooks of Albany, and Jessie McKenzie of DeSoto. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including special cousins Anthony and Timothy Westbrook.
