Cornelia Jane Harris Greene

November 20, 1921 — October 10, 2017

Cornelia Jane Harris Greene of Americus died on October 10, 2017 at her residence in Americus. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 13, at Central Baptist Church, with Dr. Bryan Myers and Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating. Private burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service, from 10:00 until 11:00 AM on Friday at Central Baptist Church. Mrs. Greene was born in the Friendship Community of Sumter County on November 20, 1921, to John Emory Harris and Sina Mae Jones Harris. She was the last survivor of their nine children. Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, J. Hubert Greene, who was a retired GSW professor. She is survived by a son, Jesse Michael Greene and wife Kathy of Americus; a daughter, Cindy Greene Collins and husband Steve of Americus; four grandchildren: Crystal Campbell and husband Jamie of Blue Ridge, Melissa McIntyre and husband Steve of New York, Jesse Nathan Greene and wife Maribel of St. George, Grenada, and Emory Michael Greene and wife Elizabeth of Americus; great-grandchildren: Lexi Jeffers and Daniel Gibson of Blue Ridge and Addison McIntyre and Cooper McIntyre of New York; sisters-in-law: Francis Shutters Harris of Americus and Lanelle Greene Philpot of Houston; and a number of nieces and nephews, including from the local area: John McDuffie and wife Martha, originally from Preston and now of Tuscaloosa, Charles McDuffie and wife Pat, originally from Preston and now of Sautee Nachoochee, Helen McDuffie Nix and husband Ronnie, originally from Preston and now of Dalton, Lou Ann Harris Lardy and husband Michael, originally from Americus and now of Moultrie, and John Harris and wife Tanya of Americus. Mrs. Greene attended Concord Elementary School, Anthony High School, Georgia Southwestern College, and graduated from Georgia State College for women at Milledgeville with a B.S. degree in Education. After graduation, she worked for the Glen L. Martin Airplane Co. in Baltimore, Maryland during World War II, before returning to Stewart County, Georgia, where she taught and coached high school basketball. She taught a number of years in the Stewart and Webster County schools. In 1967 she moved with her family to Americus, where she was the first classroom teacher employed at Southland Academy. After her retirement from Southland Academy, Mrs. Greene was a successful real estate agent with the local Century 21 Real Estate Company. Mrs. Greene was a member and Sunday School teacher at Central Baptist Church in Americus. She had been active in the Americus DAR chapter prior to her health declining.
