Mrs. Eugenia Chappell Laing, 85, 195 Middle River Road, passed away shortly after noon on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with Rev. Lowell Layman and Rev. Brooks Partain officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 30. Family members suggest that memorial contributions be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 903 Upper River Road, Americus, GA 31709. Born March 2, 1924, in Sumter County, Mrs. Laing was a daughter of the late Armstid William Chappell and Neva May Holley Chappell. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and had led in its music program, playing the organ and singing in the choir. She worked at Robins Air Force Base during World War II, and served as the secretary-bookkeeper at Sumter Livestock Association for many years. She held a lifetime membership in the Dogwood Garden Club and was a past president of the Americus Pilot Club. Survivors include her husband of more than 60 years, George Laing; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Tucker Rush and Pat and John Williams, all of Americus; a sister, Liza Parker of Americus; grandchildren, Tuck and Sheryl Rush of Americus, Julie and David Schramm of Lawrenceville, Cathy and Gene Howard and Anna and Joe Warcewicz, all of Americus; great grandchildren, Rob Rush and Mary Nell Rush of Americus, Calvin Schramm and Holly Kate Schramm of Lawrenceville, and Hailey Howard and Cody Howard, of Americus; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
