Mrs. Laverne Law, 92, of Americus, died on Sunday, November 29, 2009, in Phoebe-Putney Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Monday. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 1, in Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Atlanta Office, 17 Executive Park, Suite 115, Atlanta, GA 30329-2012. Born November 11, 1917, in Jeffersonville, Georgia, Mrs. Law was a daughter of the late John Benjamin Fountain and Laura Veal Fountain. A resident of Sumter County since 1941, she was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Silvertones of the church, and had served as chairman of a neighborhood cancer society. Mrs. Law was a graduate of the Middle Georgia College of Nursing in Macon, and served for many years as a registered nurse in the local hospital which was known at that time as the Americus-Sumter County Hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Hargrove of Sumter County and Marie Colter of Camden, TN; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Donna Law of Sumter County; grandchildren, Scott and Tammy Colter of Ellaville, Shannon and Francie Hargrove of Cashiers, NC, Jason and Jennifer Colter of Camden, TN, Quay and David Lively of Sumter County, Meredith and Rod Murray of Lee County, Mallorie Law and Mason Law, both of Sumter County. She was preceded in death by her husband, O. C. Law, Jr. and by one sister and three brothers. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee St., Americus, GA is in charge of arrangements.
