Sara Elizabeth Powell Womack

Mrs. Sara Powell Womack, 85, 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, died on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center following several months of declining health. Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2010, in Oak Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Joy Wilson and the Rev. Keith Parks officiating. Members of the Philathea Sunday School class of First Baptist Church are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers. Mrs. Womack was born August 2, 1924, in Reynolds, Georgia, the youngest of four children of the late Elbert Eugene Powell and the late Lillian Parks Powell. Mrs. Womack was preceded in death by her two brothers and a sister, Eugene Powell, Arthur Powell, and Frances Powell Benton. Upon the death of her natural mother, three months after Sara’s birth, she was moved to Ellaville where she was adopted into the hearts and loving home of her paternal uncle and aunt, the late Clarence V. Powell and the late Livie Allmon Powell and their two adult children, the late Mattie Will Powell McLeod and the late Allmon Powell. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Owen P. Womack, Jr., on December 23, 2004, and her daughter-in-law, Bett Glover Womack on Dec. 20, 1995. A devoted wife and mother, the community knew her for her warm personality, winning smile, and caring ways. She worked for many years at Manhattan Shirt Company and was also a talented cook and homemaker. In later years, at Magnolia Manor Retirement Center, she enjoyed ceramics, bingo, and took computer courses and art lessons. She became quite an avid artist. Mrs. Womack was a very active, faithful member of First Baptist Church, Americus and the Philathea Sunday School class as long as her health permitted. At Magnolia Manor, she continued to help others by serving as Section III representative and served on several councils. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bobby Dodson of Plains; a son, Bernard Womack of Americus; a grandson, Rob Dodson of Ellaville; a granddaughter, Glover Womack of Weatherford, Texas; and a great granddaughter, Kendall Dodson of Ellaville. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy Knight Womack of Americus and Mrs. Sara Womack Stocks of Leesburg. A number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends also survive. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night in the Sun Room on Section III at Magnolia Manor Retirement Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709, or to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 221 South Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
