Mr. Preston Cobb, 89, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, April 28, 2010, in Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, in the Martha McDonald Moore Memorial Chapel at Magnolia Manor with Rev. Dennis Stalvey, Rev. John Brodess, and Rev. Bill Dupree officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Born December 19, 1920, in Americus, Mr. Cobb was a son of the late William Henry Cobb and Willie Blanche Hawkins Cobb. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia where he was a member of the SAE fraternity. He had a passion for sailing and met many long-time friends while pursuing that pleasure. He also enjoyed friendships shared with other men of the community in the Romeo Coffee Club. Mr. Cobb was associated with the W. H. Cobb and Sons Insurance Agency and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He served with the U. S. Army in Central Europe during World War II, and earned the American Theater Service Medal, EAME Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Family members suggest that memorial contributions might be made to the League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709. Survivors include a nephew, Henry Cobb and his wife Ann of Atlanta; a niece, Marilyn Cavender and her husband Robert L., Jr., of Americus; a brother-in-law, Capt. Warren C. Graham, USN retired and his wife, Nancy Biddle Graham, of Burke, Virginia, and their sons, Capt. W. Curry Graham, III, USN retired, his wife and children, and Michael Y. Graham, his wife and children; a great nephew, Bryan Cobb Joiner and his wife, Lindsay and son, Dylan, of Plains; and first cousins, Thomas Hawkins of Americus and Emmett Bennett of Douglasville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Catherine “Snookie” Graham Cobb and his brother and sister-in-law, William “Billy” Hawkins Cobb and Annie Ruth Byrd Cobb.
