Mr. E. Steve Hollis, 64, of Americus, passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, in Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center. Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 9, in the First United Methodist Church of Americus with the Rev. Jim Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at Hancock Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8. At other times, friends may call at 242 Murphy Mill Road. In lieu of flowers, family members suggest that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 6744, Columbus, GA 31917-6744. Born November 24, 1945, in LaGrange, Mr. Hollis was a son of the late Dallis Fred Hollis and Virginia Dale Barrett Hollis. He attended LaGrange College, transferring to Georgia Southwestern where he received his B.S. degree. He later earned a master’s degree from the University of Georgia and a specialist’s degree from Georgia State University. He assisted in the writing of the Teacher Certification Test which was produced by the University of Georgia. Mr. Hollis was the manager of the Gardens Restaurant at Callaway Gardens from 1973 until 1974, served as the director of food service at Georgia Southwestern from 1976 until 1983, and was the marketing teacher and DECA advisor at Americus High School from 1983 until 2001. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Exchange Club, and the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He did “PR” work for the Americus school system and enjoyed working with the athletic staff, especially in ticket sales for athletic events. He was an avid collector of arrowheads and Coca Cola items, loved to fish, and enjoyed cutting grass. He received the Golden Apple award several times as teacher of the year and was such an outstanding teacher that students elected to dedicate the Americus High School yearbook to him twice. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Diane Harrell and her husband John of LaGrange, and Julie Hollis and her fiancé Steven Shellhouse of Americus; two sons, Air Force Tech. Sgt. Hank Hollis and his wife Julie of San Antonio, TX, and Ben Hollis and his fiancé Brooke Woodford of Americus; a brother, Danny Hollis and his wife Jane of LaGrange; nine grandchildren, Meagan Bailey, Austin Bailey, Elijah Hollis, and Isabella Hollis, all of San Antonio, TX, Chloe Harrell of LaGrange, Benjamin Dallis Hollis, Sydney Hollis, Amoria Sine, and Jaydon Payne, all of Americus; nephews, Cole Greene, and twins Jon and Alex Hollis; a niece, Courtney Greene; an aunt, Demeris Carter; an uncle, Charles Hollis and his wife Joane; cousins David Carter and his wife Arlene, Elaine Carter Howard, and Beth Howard Moore and her husband Larry.
