Dr. Susan C. Elrod, 70, 363 Cornwell Road, Americus, passed away at her residence early Saturday morning, December 18, 2010. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home with the Rev. Timothy J. Olds officiating. Interment, with no service, will follow in Lebanon Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 p.m. until funeral time. Born November 29, 1940, in Rome, Georgia, Dr. Elrod was a daughter of the late Ralph Lee Cornwell and Dollie Hough Cornwell. She was a Baptist and a member of the Woman’s Literary Club. She was the second female graduate of the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine, and was licensed to practice as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in five states. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sumter County Humane Society, 108 Industrial Blvd., Americus, GA 31719. Survivors include her husband, McLowery Elrod; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and David Huff of Athens and Fall and Davis Geekie of Dallas, GA; four grandchildren, Knox Huff and Rachel Huff, both of Athens, and Chalmers Geekie and Walker Geekie, both of Dallas; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Prissy Cornwell of Americus; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hancock Funeral Home, 427 South Lee Street, Americus, GA, is in charge of arrangements.
