Mrs. Sheffield was born on June 22, 1933, in Norman Park, Georgia to Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Bryant Horne. After graduating from Norman Junior College, Ann married her high school sweetheart, Charles R. Sheffield, on November 30, 1952. Ann and Charles began their new life together in Fort Ord, California, where Charles was stationed following his graduation from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. After the Korean War, the couple moved to Atlanta, where Charles began preparing for medical school. Ann was her beloved husband’s tireless supporter throughout their 50-plus years in medicine, including 20 years in Dawson, Georgia and 30 years in Americus, Georgia.
Ann’s life was defined by her unwavering Love—for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her husband Charles, her children, and grandchildren. Everywhere Ann lived, she was an active and cherished member of her local church, known for her passion for studying and teaching the Bible to individuals of all ages. Ann also had a deep love for art, music, cooking, gardening, and all things beautiful. She was a vibrant presence in every community she became part of with her outgoing and childlike spirit.
She is survived by her daughter, Joy Handelman-Swift of Albany, Georgia, and Joy’s son, Daniel Todd Handelman; her son, Charles Ray Sheffield, Jr. of Columbus, Georgia, and his wife, Rita Reeves Sheffield, and their three children, Charles Ray Sheffield III (Marcie), Reeves Watson Sheffield, and Frances Sheffield Norred (Culver). Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Dr. Charles R. Sheffield; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Bryant Horne of Norman Park, Georgia; her daughter, Paula Lee Sheffield; and her grandson, Joseph Stuart Handelman of Albany, Georgia.
Ann was a member of the First Baptist Church of Americus and the Charlie Gibbs Sunday School Class. Serving as Pallbearers will be Daniel Handelman, Charles Sheffield III, Reeves Sheffield, and Culver Norred. The Charlie Gibbs Sunday Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Americus or the Charlie Gibbs Sunday School class at 221 South Lee Street Americus, Ga. 31709.
