Mr. Edward Olan Carter, Sr., age 76, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2020 at his home in Schley County. A private family service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, June 16, in the committal pavilion at Andersonville National Historic Site. Elder Michael Lewis will officate, with burial to follow in Andersonville National Cemetery. Born May 28, 1944 in Long Island, AL, he was a son of the late William Carter and the late Irene Bethune Carter. Mr. Carter was a self employed carpenter and was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and sight-seeing, and working in his shop. He was retired after 39 years from the United States Navy, having achieved the rank of E-5 and having completed four world tours. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Stephanie Irene Carter, and by a sister, Lois. Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Carole Bass Carter; children: Tina Smith (AJ), Lori Dempsey, Edward Carter, Jr., Paul Waller, and Heather Wright (Daniel); 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Doyle, Gary, Everett, Teresa, and Debbie; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Gary & Brenda Bass and Robin & Terry Peters; and several nieces and nephews.
