Mrs. Elizabeth Buchanan Filbey, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at her home in Americus Funeral services are planned for 11:00 AM on Friday, April 28, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Daryl Brown officiating. Interment will be private. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 27, at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., between the hours of 5:00 & 7:00 PM. Friends may call at the residence of Beth and Philip Smith, 917 S. Lee St. in Americus (anytime between 1:00 & 6:00 PM) on Tuesday, April 25 and Wednesday, April 26. Born August 7, 1928 in Americus, she was a daughter of the late James Rogers Buchanan and the late Elizabeth Smith Buchanan. A 1947 graduate of Americus High School, she attended Sullens Junior College in Bristol, VA, a girls' school, from 1947 through 1949, and then attended Ringling Interior Art School in 1950, and later attended Ms. Hamilton's Business School in Americus. She married James J. Filbey on December 28, 1954 in Americus, having met him while James was working with Southern Bell. They moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they lived for three years, and over the next several years, they lived in various towns in New Jersey and Georgia before returning to Americus in the mid 1990's. She had been employed in the pharmacy area of Reds Pharmacy, in the business office at South Georgia Technical College, and as a receptionist for Dr. T. Schley Gatewood. In Americus, Mrs. Filbey was a member of First United Methodist Church and was an honorary member of the Americus Junior League. She was a member for over 50 years of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was the Marietta Chapter Regent for two years. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, having joined in 1969; was a member of the Garden Club in Marietta, GA and a member of the Women's Club of Powers Ferry United Methodist Church. First and foremost, she was a loving wife and mother. Survivors include her children: James Buchanan Filbey (Cheryl Spring) and Elizabeth Filbey Smith (Philip A. Smith); sister in law, Joyce Buchanan; eight nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Filbey; two grandsons: Jason Filbey and Christopher Filbey; and by her brother, Jimmie Buchanan. 2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
