Florence Marie Thompson passed Saturday December 31st at the age of 89 in Fort Walton Beach. Florence (nee Bridges) was born in Americus, GA, February 27, 1933 to Berta (nee Hogg) and Clyde Bridges and grew up with her brothers Clyde and Burt Bridges. She is survived by her son Jet Thompson (Dayna), daughter Angel Mowery, granddaughter Chrislyn Thompson, grandson Zack Thompson, brothers Clyde and Burt Bridges (Mary Newall). Florence was a devoted registered nurse (RN) for over 50 years caring for patients throughout the US. She also educated other nurses as an instructor at Georgia Southwestern. Devoting her life to a full-time career of service to others and to her children, she was an example to all those who saw her dedication and kindness firsthand. She retired from Fort Walton Beach Hospital after 27 years of service as a Charge Nurse on their psychiatric ward where she served to help those struggling with mental health and addiction. Florence walked in her Christian faith daily and passed her ultimate gift of her love of Jesus to her children, Jet and Angel. She loved her church, Trinity Methodist Church in Fort Walton Beach, where she had been a member and shared in prayers and fellowship since 1977. Florence traveled the world as a military wife in support of her former husband, Jack Thompson, who was a fighter pilot making reconnaissance missions into the heart of Vietnam. Her heart never strayed far from Americus; many family vacations were spent with her parents. Florence’s greatest gift was her love for those she knew and the prayers she freely bestowed on those in need whether they were patients, friends, fellow parishioners or family. Florence loved her children, family, and patients, but most of all, she loved the Lord. She never met a stranger, and she had a warm smile and a lilting Southern voice “hello,” that brightly lit a path wherever she went. The burial service will be held in Americus, GA and handled by Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S Lee Street, Americus, GA. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Methodist in Fort Walton Beach, FL at a date yet to be determined.
