Dr . Frank Burdette Jones , age 84, passed away on Sunday evening ,March 21 , at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. His daughter , Tracy Jones Frazier and sister ,Samille Basler, were by his side. Funeral services with military honors are planned for 2:00 PM on Monday, March 29 , from the committal pavilion at Andersonville National Historic Site with internment to follow in Andersonville National Cemetery. Dr. Dennis Stalvey will officiate. The family will receive friends on Monday between the hours of 11:30 and 1:30 at Hancock Funeral Home 427 S.Lee Street. Born June 34, 1936 in Wilkes County/ Washington , Georgia , he was the son of the late John Samuel Jones and Evelyn Burdette Jones/Ginn . Dr Jones was of the Presbyterian faith and was a veteran of the United States Air Force , having been on active duty from 1954 through 1958 . Earning his bachelor and masters degrees from the University of Georgia , he continued his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in Geophysical Sciences. Dr. Jones was retired from Ga. Southwestern State University where he served as the Dean of the School of Computer Sciences and was over Institutional Research. While at GSW he maintained the American Seismic Network Station. Dr Jones studied earthquakes in the Southeastern part of the US for several years and was well known for his work in earthquake seismology. Dr. Jones is a member of the American Association of Physics , the Georgia Academy of Science , the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Geophysicists. Survivors include his children: Dr Samuel Kyle Jones of Nacogdoches, Texas snd Tracy Michelle Frazier (Jason of Americus, Ga ; stepsons: Michael James Cottle (Kathy) of Newton, Kansas and Robert Scott Cottle (Miyuk) of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Samille J Basler (Dr. Tom Basler) of Mount Pleasant, SC; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and one great,great niece.
