Dr. Frank Mitchell Lowrey III went to live eternally with His Lord and Savior on July 22, 2024. What is perfect joy for him at this point is difficult for the loved ones still on earth including his wife of almost 62 years, Robin Baird Lowrey, his son, Frank Mitchell Lowrey IV (Laura) and his daughter, Amy Lowrey Maves (Sam). One of his absolute greatest joys was his grandchildren, Cameron Maves Lowery (Nolan), Mallory Maves Green (Griffin), and Kae Lowrey. He also was extremely excited to learn that he was to be a great grandfather to Cooper David Lowery in February 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Mitchell Lowrey Jr.and Lucia Cleveland Lowrey, his sister Jane Lowrey Darnell and Brother Thomas Lowrey.
Frank grew up in Centerville, Alabama and graduated from Bibb County High School in 1958. He then went on to receive his BA in history from Birmingham Southern College, and his Masters and PhD from the University of Alabama. He taught history at Georgia Southwestern State University for 33 years during which he was known to bring his guitar to class to sing history songs for his students and also stir up mischief with his buddy, Ken Huddleston.
He was a member at First Methodist Church in Americus since the late 1960’s and served as the choir director for over 30 years. His life was changed in the late 1980’s when he participated in the Walk to Emmaus Christian retreat and Frank continued to meet with a very special group of men, The Red Rooster Reunion Group, every Tuesday morning for the rest of his life. Frank was known for his low bass voice, many guitar performances, constant whistling in the hallway, and fantastic Sunday school lessons. He loved to play guitar with his best friend, Carl Tott, and they blessed many Emmaus Gatherings, Magnolia Manor and the homeless shelter with their music.
Frank also was a huge community servant serving on the local public-school board for 12 years, the state of Georgia School Board Association (President 1985-86) receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 1989, Community Service Ministries, The Americus Theatre and Cultural Authority, Mentor in the Sumter County School System, and the Citizen’s Panel Review for the Juvenile Court.
With all of his various involvements, the most important things to Frank were his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and his family. His faithful prayer life included his family and so many of you that have touched his life so deeply.
He often expressed his gratitude for the blessings of his family, especially his faithful, steadfast, and loving wife.
While we will miss him here on earth, we look forward to the day when “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, and neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away”. Revelation 21:4
