On April 16, 2022, Eleanor Gayle Stembridge was called home by her Savior. She was born on July 16, 1940, in Chipley, Florida to Morris Madison Stembridge and Sara Essie Peacock Stembridge. She graduated from Americus High School and went on to attend Georgia Southwestern College. Gayle graduated from Howard College (Samford University) in Birmingham, Alabama and taught English at Americus High School, Albany High School and at Albany State College. She retired as a consultant with the Georgia Department of Human Resources. Though Gayle has had many accomplishments, she was most proud of being the founder and first president of the Sumter Humane Society. She also was the first president of the Area Mental Health Association. She touched the lives of many people through her intellect, wittiness, kindness, and above all her generosity. She was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Americus. Services are planned for 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 23, at the Brickyard Plantation, with Rev. Wendy Peacock officiating. The family will receive friends for a short time following the services.
