Dr. James Emmett "Jimmy" Bagwell passed away on March 29, 2019, at his home in Plains, the same home in which he was born 78 years ago, on March 16, 1941. Funeral services are planned for 11:00 Monday, April 1, at Plains United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Houston, Rev. R.T. Beverly, and Rev. Jay Barcus officiating. Interment will follow in Lebanon Cemetery. The following gentlemen are asked to serve as active pallbearers: Eugene Edge, Boze Godwin, Ronnie Walton, Bobby Bacon, Bob Moss, Wade Medlock, Roy Young, and Tim Harris. The family will receive friends on Monday at the church between the hours of 10:00 & 11:00 AM, and at other times at the family residence. Having received his PhD from the University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Bagwell was a History Professor who adored his students. He taught for 40 years at Georgia Southwestern State University. He was a member of Plains United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for over 30 years; and had served on the Plains City Council for 40 years. He especially enjoyed being a "Big Daddy" to his eight grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Cindy Bagwell of Plains; one son, Brad Bagwell (Betsy) of Atlanta; one daughter, Victoria Kelley (Travis) of Americus; seven grandsons: Brooks, William & Bradford Bagwell of Atlanta, and Max, Samuel, Howell & Thomas Kelley of Americus; one granddaughter, Anne Louise Bagwell of Atlanta; one nephew, Mill Simmons (Gloria) of Plains; one great-niece, Paige Simmons (Kathy) of Plains; one great-nephew, Rhett Simmons (Jessi) of Americus; one great-great-niece, Milly Simmons of Americus; and family friend & caregiver, Viola (Pearl) Patillo of Plains. He was preceded in death by his mother, Floy Bagwell; by his sister, Anne Simmons; and brother-in-law, Millard Simmons.
