Mrs. Mary Virgene Carter Singletary, age 94, of Plains, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021 at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. Services are planned for 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 10, from the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St. Interment will follow in the Singletary family cemetery in Plains. Born November 10, 1926 in Thomas County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Ellwood Carter and the late Bertha Mae Hodges Carter. Mrs. Singletary was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Having obtained her higher education as a Specialist in Education, she was a Georgia teacher of biological science, most recently in the Fulton County School System. She loved plants and flowers, nurturing anything that grows. During the 1960's, she and her late husband, John Len Singletary, were avid civil rights workers. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Singletary was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Carter. Survivors include her children: Paul Singletary, Dr. Mary Sue Singletary, and Leila Mae Singletary; grandchildren: Marie Jean Singletary-Larson, Rachel Singletary-Gates, and Mary Lynn Singletary Sinisi; her caretaker and partner of 35 years, Jerome Spires; and her dear friends Sarah Ellington and Christine Gardner.
