Michael J. Whitley, Sr.

Mr. Michael "Mike" J. Whitley, Sr., age 76, passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at his home in Cobb. Private family services will be held. Born July 6, 1945 in Birmingham, AL, he was a son of the late Wade Howard Whitley and the late Jean LaClaire Gadd Whitley. Mike founded Americus Glass Company, and after retirement worked with Dougherty Glass Company for a number of years. He was a very talented and creative stained glass artist and continued to create stained glass for family and friends. He was an avid golfer and was of the Presbyterian faith. Mike enjoyed attending activities in which his grandchildren participated. He was retired football referee at Americus High School, and was an alumnus of the University of Florida. Survivors include his wife, Brenda T. Whitley; his children: Jerry Whitley, Chris Whitley (Dana), Lance Whitley (Teresa), Richard Boyd (Dora), Steven Lee Boyd, and Jonathan Boyd (Sa'de); brother-in-law, Dr. Robert G. Mathis, PhD (Cathy); sister-in-law, Mary Whitley; grandchildren: Lee Whitley (Kitty), Nicki Whitley, Stephen Whitley, Jairus Whitley, Tatum Sprinkle (Matthew), Lathon Whitley (Madison), Kathryn Whitley, Cameron Boyd, Lexie Boyd, Aiden Boyd, Gabriel Boyd, and Kaitlyn Boyd; great-grandchildren: Layden Pipkin, Amberlin Pipkin, Bralie Whitley, Tony Brown, and Gypsy Brown; mother-in-law, Gladys Mathis; daughter-in-love, Lynn Harris (Bobby); several nieces & nephews, including Samantha Rambo (Jason) and Aiden & KK; and his furry babies, Precious and Jessie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann G. Whitley; by two brothers: LTC Wade Howard Whitley, II and Richard Whitley; and a granddaughter, Alyssa Boyd.
