Robert Emmett Monahan, Jr.

April 19, 1929 — January 8, 2020

Robert Emmett Monahan, Jr.  passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at his home in Americus. He was born in Americus, GA on April 19, 1929 to Robert Emmett Monahan and Irma Tooke Monahan.  Bobby had an active youth, raising rabbits and chickens and working at the family dairy; he worked as a paperboy and soda jerk. Bobby proudly represented the Boy Scouts.  Bobby enjoyed his  large extended family and was especially close to his grandmother Eva Tooke. He graduated from Americus High School in 1946 and attended Georgia Tech, receiving degrees in industrial management and engineering.  He was in the Naval ROTC program and a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and Alpha Pi Mu honor society. Upon graduation Bobby entered active duty in the Navy which afforded an opportunity to see much of Europe and Asia.  His assignments included naval support for H-bomb development and the Korean conflict. After three years of active duty, Robert  participated in the Naval Reserves for over 30 years,  retiring with the rank of Captain. Robert  was prouder of his Naval service than any other accomplishment. Robert spent the entirety of his career working in systems management at U.S. Steel in Birmingham, AL. In later years he worked to automate various steel making processes. He retired in 1986. On returning to Americus, this farmer at heart enjoyed being closer to his beloved farm. Whether gardening, planting longleaf pine, or deer hunting with his  much adored nephew, Neil, he treasured every moment spent there. He died peacefully at home. He will be remembered as a  bright, loving, patriotic, and responsible man, who lived to work and care for his wife and children. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Tony Shariett Monahan;  his children: Robert Emmett Monahan, III, MD, Macon;  Nan Royal Monahan, MD (George), Atlanta; Ann Corneille Monahan, PhD, Birmingham;  granddaughters: Katherine (“Kate”) Monahan, Radford, VA and Eva Monahan, Birmingham; his sister Carol Monahan Kain and her children Leigh Glover, Kathy Kain and Neil Arthur Kain, III all of the Atlanta area. Robert’s  grandfather served as  fire chief of Americus,  and we are grateful to the department for their kind  help these last few months. Funeral services and committal with Navy Honors were held at 12:00 noon on Sunday, January 12, in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home.  Dr. Nan Monahan and Rev. Brooks Partain officiated.  Private interment followed in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family received friends between the hours of 11:00 & 12:00 at Hancock Funeral Home.
